Phonics

Children are taught how to listen and discern sound as the progressively learn the sounds and names of:

 each letter a,b,c,

 the sound two letters make together e.g.  ch,   sh,  oo

 the sound three letters e.g. ing,  igh

 and the various letter patterns and options there are for spelling and writing the English Language.

At the Infant and Nursery School children have a daily phonic session called ‘Letters and Sounds’ which is very structured, active and is enjoyable too. Children are supported as they make connections between phonic sounds they use to read and how to use sounds to write

For older children, using phonic strategies is still very relevant when de-coding new words but is one of several skills that can be used when reading  and writing.
