Thank you for taking the time to visit our Nursery School page - we hope that

you will find it interesting and informative.

If you would like to come and have a look at the Nursery, please phone the main school office and we can arrange a date and time. We hope that the information on this website gives you a feel for our wonderful setting. If you have any questions please contact the main school office who will pass on your query to Clare Farion, our Nursery leader and Early Years lead.

Our Federation includes the Nursery the Infant School and the Junior School. We work collaboratively to ensure that all of our children are happy, develop a love of learning, make friends and have smooth transition from Nursery right through to Year 6.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Early Years of Education are the foundation for children’s future development, providing a strong base for lifelong learning and learning abilities, including cognitive and social development.

We are committed to providing a high quality curriculum that enables children to acquire the skills represented in the EYFS Framework (2021) through meaningful learning opportunities. We have crafted the curriculum to include a balance of adult-directed and child-initiated activities, considering the intellectual challenge in all that the children experience.

We work hard to build positive and respectful relationships with the children, their families and their community – working in partnership to ensure all children are confident, happy, self-assured and successful.

For more information about the Early Years Curriculum, please read the documents below.

We are a Nursery School

There is often some confusion about the difference between Nursery Schools and Pre-Schools.

Stoke Hill Nursery is a maintained Nursery School which is led and managed by a fully qualified early years teacher and all staff hold a level 3 early years qualification or above.

Pre-schools do not have to have an early years teacher, that is the key difference.

We encourage our families to refer to us as Stoke Hill Nursery School.

Nursery Sessions

Our Nursery sessions run in line with the school term. We offer morning and afternoon sessions as well as a full day.

We have wonderful extended hours provision which is located at the Junior School and managed by Lisa Sinclair. This is a welcoming and nurturing environment for the children in the Nursery, Infant and Junior School - please have a look at the photographs to see the great environment.

Breakfast club starts at 7.30am and after school club is open until 6pm. Please contact Lisa directly for more information 01392 667830 / 07906 815479 or email: lisa.sinclair@stokehill.devon.sch.uk

In the Nursery, a morning session is from 9.00am-12.00pm and an afternoon session is from 12.30pm - 3.00pm.

We open the gates at 8.50am in the morning and we encourage all children to arrive by 9.10am. At the end of the day, we open the gate at 2.55pm.

A full day is from 9.00am-3.00pm and children bring a packed lunch from home or you can purchase a school meal if you prefer for £2.

Your child may be entitled to a free school meal, please speak to the admin team about this. Please have a look at the attached menu to see what delicious food we have to offer!

All families can access their 15 hours Early Years entitlement and some families may be eligible for 30 hours of funding. Speak to our administrator for more information and advice.

We highly recommend that families access their full 15 hours of funding at Stoke Hill Nursery where possible as this gives the children time to really get to know the other children, staff and get really involved and engaged in what the Nursery has to offer.

What will I become when I go to Stoke Hill Nursery School?

Stoke Hill a creative and inspirational teacher led Nursery School, offering a stimulating indoor and outdoor environment to play and explore. We hope this video gives you a flavour of the different experiences and opportunities that your child will have when they are here.

Each class in the school has a name and the children in the Nursery are the 'Moles'. We think that this image by artist Charlie Mackesy perfectly captures our thoughts about early childhood.

What do our parents say?

'My son has had such a positive start to his early education at Stoke Hill. He loves going to Nursery and has an amazing time playing and learning. He is encouraged to be independent and his interests and ideas are really valued by the nurturing team of staff. The Nursery environment inside and out is amazing and there are always lots of different things to do.’

Parental comment, 2020

'The Nursery have been fantastic at understanding my child's additional needs and have continued to provide any care needed for him. This Nursery really is a magical place with lots to do and explore and has given my children hours of happiness.'

'Stoke Hill Nursery have been absolutely key to supporting my son’s development and supporting us as a family through lockdown and onwards. Without all the efforts of the team I would be very worried about whether he would be ready to start school in September but now he is so ready for it and I know he will thrive because of that nurturing and dedicated environment Stoke Hill Nursery have provided for him.'

We really like this poem by Pamela Houk - it sums up our vision for every child and gives a sense of our Nursery.
